Doctors Getting Paid to Post? (Maybe)

April 19th, 2012 · Entrepreneurship

Hi –

Like many of you I am a member of Sermo. If you’re not familiar with Sermo, it’s a social media site for doctors. It can be a smorgasbord of information, but there is a lot of mudslinging and rants about politics and patients that to me, are a big turnoff. (if you were ever curious to see what happens when doctors can post anonymously – then Sermo is your site!).

Every other day or so I get solicited to post on their forum.

Like this one:

Now there’s a reason they want to pay to post.

The lifeblood of any online community is by how popular the posts are.

And it works like clockwork.

Because I always see a rush of posts on Sermo for the different categories anytime they send an email blast. Who knew the thought of the “possibility of payment” is enticing?

Now there are some posts that are truly brilliant and insightful.
And it lead me to thinking, what if these doctors (who truly have something to say), directed their attention at getting paid for their writing?

Imagine taking their writings and starting their own blog or eBook?

The information age has really allowed anyone to become an information publisher.

I’ve been a big advocate of getting your own book on Amazon Kindle. In fact,
one of my own students (a radiologist) started in December is selling about 300 books a month and he admits he’s just getting started!

With the Apple Ipad you can truly create some beautiful multimedia textbooks.
There’s also Barnes and Noble PubIt, SmashWords, Lulu, Google Books, and many other distributors. There really is ample opportunities for distribution without breaking the bank.

If you’ve got something to say – why not get paid doing it?

The Fear of Losing

March 20th, 2012 · Entrepreneurship

Came across an excellent video by someone I respect and recommend: Gary Vaynerchuk (author of “Crush It” – a book I’ve recommended endlessly). Note (NSFW Bad language – and yes I know he looks creepy)

I talk to a lot of doctors who want to make a change, but are afraid of how “that will look”. And then when I talk to them a few months later, nothing happens.

This is something I want to get across – if you want to take action on your business ideas (or do something outside your conventional medical thinking) you need to stop caring what other people think about you. You are not doing this for your colleagues, your patients, your patient’s friends, your alma mater, – you are doing this for YOU and your family, and the people you can help by bringing your ideas to the market. Open up opportunities and allow yourself to do what you want to do.

Stop the Fear of Losing – Do something today, that will make a difference tomorrow.

Here’s another great video by the late Jim Rohn…(with less bad language)

Hiring Interns for Your Business

February 1st, 2012 · Entrepreneurship, Internet Business

If you are building your company on a limited budget, you may have thought of the idea of hiring interns. We’ve had multiple interns work for our web marketing company for the last year. As doctors, there is also an opportunity to hire medical students (4th year) or even senior year residents.

Among the different tasks our interns have done for our company included:

1. Social Media – setting up Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter pages, creating new posts and linking to important news for our clients.

2. Writing – Each week, I have one of my interns conduct research and post articles to our company blogs.

3. Networking – Attend local business events for marketing purposes.

4. Read books or purchase relevant information products in your industry, create summaries, and have them present a synopsis of what they’ve read.

5. Day to Day office tasks such as assisting different marketing efforts, testing different advertising, search engine optimizaton, and preparing leads for our salesteam.

I make it a point to spend time with our interns and teach topics to understand why they are doing the work they are doing. Many of my interns are interested in starting their own company, and have remarked they’ve gotten more “real world” training then they would getting an MBA. You have the option of choosing to offer a free or paid internship, and I also identify interns who would become good candidates for regular future employment.

Where to find interns? If you live near a community college or university, contact your local students groups or job board. If you are seeking a medical student, contact your medical school.
You can also find interns by posting to CraigsList, or school and community newspapers. Prepare to offer references and a description of what you are planning to offer to benefit the student.

It is important to remember the intern is there for educational purposes, not just a tool for cheap labor. Communication with your intern is key for the mutual benefit of growing your company.

A reminder, we are beginning our first session of our multi-week training, Starting Point, soon. If you want to get started in internet business, this is a great time to register! We have offered a 2 pay option for those with limited budgets. For more information, please go here.
